West Coast blogging - Day 7
Brief recap of the past few days. We spent Friday in the Haight and in Golden Gate Park. Once upon a time, hippies with no money found these beautiful, neglected Victorian houses in the Haight district, that could be purchased for nearly nothing, and turned them into this.
As some singer or other once said, you can't touch this. Not on a workingman's salary.
But living on a block of $2 million homes is apparently not without its own problmes. Not sure what this is all about, but someone is not happy with their neighbors.
Haight Ave. runs pretty much into the east boundary of Golden Gate Park. A few blocks in, past the Fuchsia Gardens and horseshoe courts, is the Conservatory of Flowers.
The dahlias were blooming this week. Hard to believe these are all the same flowers.
The original Laurel and Hardy looking up at a statue of their creator.
Saturday we headed over to the East Bay, taking the BART to Berkeley. The Old Time Music Festival was happening near the farmer's market. Music Maker artist Benton Flippen was scheduled to appear, but we didn't stick around long enough to catch his set.
We had a couple of friends to visit on that side of the water. My old college roommate EP, who's been a teacher in San Lorenzo for the past 18 or so years, and JK, the uncle of the bride, who lives in the hills above Berkeley. I come from a pretty working class background, and although i occasionally get to hang out with the rich and famous, there have been very few times in my life when i've been in a house that was this impressive. There's a great story behind the building and restoration of the house, which i may or may not retell at some point. Here's the view from the front deck.
That's the Bay Bridge on the left, the San Francisco skyline in the center, and the TV tower just to the right of center. When the light's right, you can see the Golden Gate, about 9 miles away. Truly impressive. Afterward, Mrs. D, EP, and i hooked up for some pretty good Indian food on Lakeshore Ave. (Fortunately, i've been walking about 3 miles a day in hilly terrain. Otherwise i'd come back from this trip 15 pounds heavier.)
That covers Saturday. The wedding on Sunday, and our South Bay trip on Monday and current excursion up to Fort Bragg/Mendocino will have to wait till the morning.
