West Coast blogging - day 4 part 2

Aside from the housing prices, most of what i've had to spend money on has seemed to be in line with what i spend in NC. We've eaten out a lot more than at home, but every meal has been great, and cheaper than Durham. So i was quite surprised when we sat down at the Hog Island Oyster Company on the Embarcadero waterfront.

See, i'm used to oysters at 10 bucks a dozen, maybe 18 tops for special events. But i can easily plow through 3 dozen at the Oyster Bar's Friday afternoon, where they're only 5 dollars a dozen.

I mean, they were good eats. But 30 dollars for 12 little guys? Wow.

There are still some of the older streetcars in service at the Embarcadero, although most have been upgraded to the new Pininfarina models.

I got to use this odd little structure too. It's bigger on the inside. I like to think of it as civilization for the Flomax generation.

Here's some more food related shots:

(that's for Kevin)

My other favorite bar in San Francisco, besides Plough and the Stars, is Vesuvio, on Columbus. It's where Jack Kerouac used to drink martinis in the 50s, and it's where i had my own first martini about 30 years ago. And my most recent last night.

Vesuvio is in a bit of a red light district.

Let's get a closer look at that marquee.

Cool. Teachers are underpaid around here, so at least they can get a discount on their porn.

Looks like bongs are still legal here.

  • If you call them "water pipes" they're still legal on 15-501 as well (see Cherry Pie near Sage Rd.)

  • Can someone back me up on this: isn't pizza by the slice still cheaper in NYC? I'm thinking 2 bucks, 2.50 tops?

    Call it former NYer pride.

    See you at the 'shmong.
