Left hand, meet right hand

Eric Ferrari at the N&O's Bull's Eye blog writes:
If you see smoke today at N.C. Central University, fear not!

The university is testing its sewer lines by forcing smoke into them using a motorized blower. Smoke that escapes will reveal breaks and defects in the sewer lines.

To prevent smoke from entering classrooms and office buildings, people are urged to pour a gallon of water into every sink, tub and floor drain that doesn't receive regular use.

Good timing, that

  • It's actually not a bad idea. If all the water evaporated out of the trap, then it isn't a trap anymore, and sewer gas can come backward through the trap and into your house. Sewer gas is flammable (as well as just smelling bad). You just have to pour in enough water to fill the trap. I guess if you felt bad about it, you could capture shower water, or maybe just pee in it. :)

  • If they're drains and sinks, etc., that receive so little "regular use" that the water in the traps is evaporating, maybe the best thing to do would be to cap them for the duration of the drought.

it's the public relations aspect of it that seems weird.

on the other hand, when my mom leaves her condo for more than a week at a time, she puts plastic wrap over the toilets. now that i think about it, that's probably the reason.
