Grocery wars

Earlier this spring i got it into my head to start an irregular feature at DE called "The Compare Foods find of the week." Inspired by the indescribable "miembres de res," about which the less said the better, i would take my point and shoot into the store and snap the most oddball thing i could find.

Well, Phil pretty much beat me to it with this one, but at least it confirmed that i was on to something.

We sent a few acquaintances to read Phil's post about Compare, and lo and behold, a challenge was born.

From San Francisco, we received this circular in the mail this week.

Let's zoom in on the item of note.

As of now, i'd have to put the Manila Oriental Market ahead on points. But it's still early in the match, and it might be that the MOM has already landed its best punch. I think Compare can pull it out in the later rounds. Keep your eyes open.

  • In an odd tie-in between your items, you'll notice that the MOM market is about where Mission St. meets Ney St. Your tale, in another post, about someone killing live chickens in their yard reminded me of when my friends (the ones who shop at the MOM mart) bought their home on Ney Street. That very week, in the SF Chronicle, was a story about people practicing santeria rites and slaughtering live goats...on Ney St.

I wonder if they bought the goats at the MOM mart.

  • They do sell goat meat.. and beef lips, and pig intestine, and feet of all kinds, and Geoduck clams and at my last count 11 unique type of choy

The crunchy snack foods are also fun-our favorite is- "Mr. Squid...tasty AND spicy!"

  • There is no part of the pig that is not for sale at Compare Foods, and very few parts of the cow, for that matter.

i'm not sure if Phil or i or someone else will post on this, but you'll see something that tops the frog pretty soon.
