Doing the "Wright" thing

Well, good news and bad news about Steven Wright's performance tonight at the Carolina Theatre.

This was the last live performance before the Carolina shuts down for the summer for some much needed repairs, and they decided to turn it into a fundraiser. For an extra 60 bucks, you got a ticket to a pre-show reception at which it was strongly hinted that Steven Wright would be in attendance.

Upon arrival, Connie Camponaro reminded us that the ticket packet included a disclaimer that "celebrity appearance was not guaranteed." Actually, upon reviewing my ticket packet, i don't see anything like that. On the other hand, the publicity never really says "Meet Steven Wright at a pre-show party," so i guess i should have read much more closely. The money went to a good cause anyway, and the All About Beer folks stocked up the bar with some interesting brews, so that was good.

I'm more disappointed at not getting a chance to have an item of personal significance signed by Steven, and missing the chance to explain to him why it was significant, rather than upset by the way that whole thing went, but hopefully Connie will be able to get him to sign it and relay the story to him backstage.

The good news is, he was as funny on stage as i expected him to be, and i'm glad to have gone, but damn if i can remember any of his jokes. I wonder if he does that on purpose?

  • We were careful not to lead people to believe Steven would be at the reception. I hope no one was under the assumption he'd be there or that they felt their contribution was wasted because he was not.

Interestingly, he and his management were well aware that his performance was connected to a fundraising reception, and they never officially ruled out Wright making an appearance. We were hoping he might show up, but nobody expected he would, given the claims that he's just as reserved in person as he appears on stage.

I suppose the fact that he had the option to make an appearance was part of the reason we chose not to explicitly say in our marketing plan that Steven will not be in attendance at the reception.

  • Thanks for stopping by and filling us in. Looking back over the marketing, i agree, but leading up to the reception, i certainly made the assumption that it would include an appearance with Steven Wright.

I had a whole routine worked out in which i was going to have him sign one of my larger sea shells, which i apparently stole from his collection many years ago. I left it with Connie and hopefully, it'll come back to me signed anyway.

Interesting thing about fundraisers. We held the Beaver Queen Pageant last weekend, as you may know if you read the blog on a regular basis. One of the comments we received was "thank goodness this isn't another silent auction." Although seeing how much money the silent auctions i've been to in the past year have raised, compared to how much the BQP raised, maybe that's something we should consider.

Anyway, i have no regrets about contributing to the Carolina. Just a little natural disappointment.
