Idiots

According to a posting just now on the Northgate Park listserv, and reposted to PAC2, someone clipped the head off the brontosaurus on the dinosaur trail off Murray Avenue over the weekend. It was definitely still there when i drove by on Saturday afternoon, so it probably happened last night.

Those dinosaurs have been there for more than 50 years, and are (or were) going to be saved as part of the new updated and more scientifically accurate dinosaur display slated for the Science Museum real soon now.

What a bunch of maroons.

UPDATE:
The Museum is asking people to upload pictures of the dinosaurs to their Flickr page here.

From the Museum's statement:
Durham Police officials received a call this morning stating that the Brontosaurus, which was part of the Museum of Life and Science’s old Dinosaur Trail was likely vandalized. A small portion of the neck was found on the ground, while the head was missing. Museum staff are in the process of filing a police report. “We’re saddened by what happened,” comments Barry Van Deman, CEO of Museum of Life and Science.

The old trail, which opened in 1967 has a long standing history with the citizens of Durham, especially residents of Northgate Park and Colonial Village.

I'll have pictures posted in the morning showing the damage.

  • That's a pisser! I've seen photo's of the bronto, but had never ventured over to see it in person. I drove by today when I was out and about, but didn't know where it was supposed to be so I was flying blind.

Is it located right at the museum, or down Murray aways as you drive towards Duke? I'd be interested in going over and seeing what remains.

  • DE, I just (1:33PM today) got email on the Northgate Park email list that the head has been recovered! People involved have been identified, and I'm guessing will be arrested shortly. The head's been returned to the museum. Many thanks to Investigator Little!
