DATA

The folks who run DATA (Durham Area Transit Authority) want to know what they can do to enhance bus service enough to get you to ride the bus.

For starters, how about a bus stop that doesn't look like this?

  • At least you have a bus stop. We don't have one close enough to use. That's what I put on our form.

  • Our closest bus stop (near Roxboro & Infinity) is about a half mile from our home, but the walk would require walking along Infinity, which lacks sidewalks, adequate shoulders, lighting and people who drive the speed limit (35).

Besides, for my commute, I'd have to leave at 6:45am to be guaranteed to be at work (Trent & Erwin Road) by 9am (or spend 18mins in the car -- biking on US-501 or Guess Road isn't a reasonable suggestion). My wife would have to leave at 5am to get to her job at the hospital, and wouldn't get home until either 10 or 11, depending on whether she'd be able to catch the 7:40pm bus at DUMC.

(Yes, I said all of this, with route numbers, via the survey.)

Say what you will about D.C., but it and the surrounding suburbs have a functional, convenient public transportation system. I had no problem taking the Metro or buses to where I needed to go, when I needed to get there (I'll admit that I did use cabs when time was critical.)

  • My feedback said something along the lines of: I wish the Trip Planner were actually useful and it would be nice to be able to purchase or at least reload fare cards online. Thanks for the heads-up!
