Great moments in marketing

My hat is off to the marketing genius who not only came up with the name for this concrete pumper, but was able to sell it to the manufacturer. That's marketing Hall of Fame type genius at work, that is.

I don't speak German, but dict.cc suggests "grout" or "plaster" as a noun translation for putz, so "plastermaster" is pretty catchy, yes. I assume that in current vernacular it can also be understood as cement/concrete.

Since it's a german company, maybe it wasn't such a hard sell?

  • Yiddish hasn't been prevalent in Germany since roughly 1936 (three guesses as to why), which would explain why "putz" has a completely different connotation to a postwar American (or Russian) versus what it means to a German (where it's a diminutive form of "putzen," which is an architectural adornment.

1958 - Karl Schlecht founds KS-Maschinenbau in Germany, eventually renamed Putzmeister (plaster master).
