Go fly a kite
Someone on my neighborhood listserv wants to know the best places in town for kite-flying. It's for a 4 year old's birthday party coming up in March, so the venue needs to be both kid party friendly (benches/picnic tables and bathrooms, at a minimum), as well as kite friendly.
The field off Main St. near Erwin Sq. has been mentioned, as has Duke Gardens, DCP, and Forest Hills Park.
Where would you take a bunch of 4 year olds for a kite flying birthday party?

Check out Little River Park (http://www.enoriver.org/eno/parks/LittleRiverPark.html). There is a big open field and picnic shelters, lots of parking.

You got all the best ones I can think of. The Erwin Square field is really phenomenal for it. Other than that, the parking lot and meadow at the Few's Ford trailhead at Eno River.

The best place I have flown kites is at Lake Crabtree (near RDU). The peninsula provides a large area to have kites and the lake tends to smooth the air out. The park has all you are looking for, plus a couple playgrounds. If you are lucky, you will see people flying 2 and 4 string stunt kites there.

We fly sometimes at Durham Central Park (on the craft market side, not the farmers' market side). You can run down the hill if the wind is weak. Added bonus, it's nearly next to the Scrap Exchange (a great party host).
