You're too much, Barry.

I am definitely old skool when it comes to pizza.

Heh -- at one point Barry said that a re-opened King's Sandwich Shop would be in keeping with the motif of pizza by the slice, that it was an economic thing. Now that that's out of the way, we can cook it down to pure NY nostalgia (which is perfectly legitimate, IMO).
It's a hike, but my guess is that Anna Maria's in Carrboro and Hillsborough is the closest thing around here to your New York ideal?
(FWIW, I'm pretty catholic about pizza. I absolutely love classic NY pizza, but a properly done Uno's style Chicago pizza is pretty damn good too, and the Neopolitan style is of course classic. Klaussie's is too bready form me, but the one I got at Scratch last Wednesday was freakin' awesome.)

Haven't tried Anna Maria's. Where in Hillsborough are they?
Also, Brooklyn Pizza on Erwin (near 6 Plates) is decent enough.

Up by Maxway (part of the Art Pope empire of assholes), where Wal-Mart used to be, at the intersection of Churton and US 70. Google finds it well enough.
The Carrboro one is at Carrboro Plaza.
I wouldn't call it fantastic, but it's at least a classic NY pizza by the slice place.

I also just remembered Italian Pizzeria Restaurant in Willowdaile. I can't remember what their pizza is like, but their cheesesteaks were some of the best we found when a group of us (lead by Joe Vilas) went on a cheesesteak tour of Durham.
