Ooops

Today's Parade Magazine illustrates the dangers of a long lead time:

As Benazir Bhutto seeks a return to power, Tuesday's election in Pakistan could profoundly affect the fight against terrorism.

Or not.

UPDATE: Parade issued a statement last week about this, but didn't have time to modify their cover image? WTF?

  • It's not too surprising that they couldn't change the image. I'm sure Parade is printed alongside all the other glossy circulars that give the Sunday papers so much heft. These circulars, and non-timely sections such as travel, are printed days in advance of Sunday delivery, leaving late Saturday night for the sections that contain breaking news. Parade would have to back up their lead time even more b/c they have to get their product out to newspapers all over America.

By the way, the cops are swarming around a house at the end of my street. Have you heard anything?

    Happy new year,

  • Given the magnitude of the assassination and its significance, the headline "Is Benazir Bhutto America's best hope against Al-Qaeda" was exceptionally unfortunate.

Putting a snipe or block on the cover explaining what had happened would have been expensive, but technologically feasible. Sometimes you need to do the right thing, even if it costs you some money.

And no, there's nothing on the PAC 2 list about any police activity on your block at this time.

  • Parade's a bit behind the times.

The previous edition's cover story was "written" by George W. Bush, "What Made My Year Special". Given the big stupid grin on his face, you'd think it was an issue from 2001 when Bush's approval rating was 90%.

Next week, Parade's cover story is "Bill Bradley: Is This His Year?"
