What's up with Fishmonger's?

I was a little disappointed last Friday to walk up to the 'Schmong for my regular oysters and beer session and see a sign on the door saying they were closed for a couple of days to (i'm not making this up) spend more time with the family.

There were signs of perhaps a redecorating project being undertaken as well, but the note promised a Sunday reopening.

Today's note is a little different.
Obviously, Monday has come and gone, and looking through the window, it doesn't look like much progress has been made on the repainting front. Last year around this time there was a rumor that the place was in the process of being sold. That didn't pan out, but i've counted every Friday afternoon i've spent upstairs since as a bonus. I'm hearing different rumors this time (which, as a responsible blogger i've decided not to reprint) which don't give me a good feeling. Anybody with the real skinny care to enlighten us as to what the New Year will bring at one of my favorite dives?

  • There were several men working inside when we passed by on Saturday. Matt said it looked like they were painting.

  • Hopefully it is not a sign of things to come for Fishmongers, but it is worth pointing out that the demise of Joe & Jos and Fowlers both started with a "we will be closing for a couple of days" sign. Neither ever reopened.

  • As a former and occasional employee, I can say that they really did just close for the weekend. They did some repainting, but in true Monger's fashion, sometimes things take a little longer than you'd expect. They picked a good weekend to shut down, what with all the road construction out front.

My roommate has already left to work the dinner shift, so stop by for some seafood.

  • So, does this mean that Fishmonger's is no longer receiving dreadful sanitation scores by the health department?

The last time I entered the establishment (admittedly, it was ~12 years ago, I turned on my heels as soon as I saw the cleanliness grade (which I believe was in the mid-to-low 80's).

I'm asking in all seriousness -- Fishmonger's was a staple for my family in the 80's, when we lived on Englewood, between Duke and Gregson. (Our house was bought by a hopeful restauranteur named Ben Barker.)

  • Their health department rating was 94.5 when I checked at lunch yesterday.
