Do i smell a lawsuit coming on?

From an anonymous commenter below, discussing the Amadou Diallo case (about which, the last time i checked, the man was still dead):
Unlike the duke case, it didn't involve a whole community involved in the witch hunt, a corrupt D.A., a corrupt DNA lab, etc.

As far as i can tell, in the November general election last year, Nifong received somewhat less than 50% of the vote in what was essentially a referendum on the Duke lacrosse case. From which it's a fair stretch to say "the whole community" was "involved in the witch hunt." (Which is an interesting metaphor of choice that will perhaps be the topic of a future blog post.) I wonder if that 51% of the community which expressed its disapproval of the Durham DA will appreciate having its reputation tarnished in this fashion, or if it will seek financial compensation? Perhaps i should post a disclaimer that i'm not responsible for the views of my commenters?

Full disclosure: I voted for Nifong. So sue me. Oh, wait, you already did.

  • It was 90-something percent of the African-American voting population of Durham that voted for Nifong, which is what put him in there. Along with a number of Caucasians, assumedly, who didn't care about innocents being railroaded. What did Hall at NCCU say? He wanted them prosecuted "...whether it happened or not"? The 51 percent that voted otherwise: unfortunately, the votes were split. If there was ultimate justice, in years to come the smarter 51 percent should be able to sue those who voted for Nifong to make up for their extra taxes.

  • How did the gays vote? Maybe it was their fault?

  • Gays, unfortunately (I'm gay myself) in Durham apparently had such a hatred for heterosexual white males (assuming all the lax team members are heterosexual, I guess) that they joined forces with black homophobe Victoria Peterson (the "strange bedfellows" syndrome). The Durham Peoples' Alliance backed Nifong in the election. Your trite joking responses can't change the facts. joe tynan (jtlooking@aol.com)

  • The comments on this thread display an appalling lack of knowledge about Durham and what really happened -- the black community was the FIRST block of Durham voters to desert Mike Nifong. They were rats deserting a sinking ship, only they jumped off about the moment it pulled out of port. The news about the accusers credibility spread like wildfire long before it hit the papers and they were gone in a flash. Only a handful of opportunists remained backing Nifong.

And by the way: we don't actually tabulate votes by race down here, so I am curious as to your source. What odd Northern customs you people have....

  • Joe T, you are such a liar. If you really were gay, you would surely have seen "Oklahoma" and known that banging pots and pans together was a "shivoree"!!

  • Joe's a big-shot lawyer who lives about 500 miles away, and he's never set foot in Durham, North Carolina. Those who actually live in Durham and have expressed anything less than fawning admiration and selfless sympathy for the Duke lacrosse team are labeled potbangers and allies of Victoria Peterson. He has no idea what the hell he's talking about.

  • LOL. I'm a lawyer? I love the way you "anons" live in such a fantasy world, about my profession and about everything else about the case. It's 2008. The new chapters are beginning. - Joe Tynan (jtlooking@aol.com)
