From what I can surmise, it would not be out of character for the Big G to still be processing and contemplating all the thousands of responses they've gotten. I would expect that cities would be hearing soon on next steps, but I suspect everyone's out there in the waiting game -- or, they've picked someone already and they're having discussions with somebody under NDAs.
Oh, i'm pretty sure that Google will announce either a "short list" or a "long list" of "semi-finalist" candidates and milk another couple hundred million dollars of free publicity out of this before all is said and done.
A much better approach would be for these cities and civic booster groups to band together and get some of the laws preventing municipal broad band overturned and start catching up to the rest of the world in terms of what's available to most residents both in quality and price of broadband services.
Since 1949, Durhamites have slept soundly, secure in the knowledge that, in our town, erection can be depended upon. Now, thanks to the power of the internets, we can spread that security all over the world.
