Just wondering

In light of the just received press release from the city that garbage collection is suspended on Monday, and bulky item collection suspended for Tuesday (a decision has not been made regarding regular garbage pickup for Tuesday), surely someone from the city or county has run numbers to determine the lost sales tax revenue from not being able to clear roads for a minimum of three days after a minor snow event. More broadly, is there an analysis of lost productivity due to working parents having to stay home with their school age kids because schools and day care centers are closed?

UPDATE: Duke & Gregson were in pretty good shape tonight. Roxboro was patchy but acceptable. Foster Street? You've got to be kidding me. That's the north/south streets in my neck of the woods. Markham and Trinity? Gonna be a bitch in the morning after 10 hours of sub-20 degree cold.

  • FYI...Durham Police will only respond to "real emergencies due to the weather conditions"...no matter that the dog that has been barking for the past hour nonstop is probably doing so because she's outside in a pen without food or water in these weather conditions. If I use my bolt-cutters to get her out of her pen, am I exempt from any crime due to the weather conditions?

Yes, I know, an animal freezing to death is not an emergency in Durham. If I were having a heart attack, I'd like emergency personnel to come get me before shutting up the dog. But still...

  • Been 5 days since we reported the two dogs at 1702 Avondale, being kept confined to a front porch with no additional shelter, to Animal Control.

Heard them still barking this afternoon, but not so far this evening.

Current county law requires 200 sq. feet per dog over 20 pounds. These guys have about 80 square feet combined, and are exposed to the elements.

Haven't heard back from AC whether or not they've managed to get anyone over there to check on these dogs.
