Deep thoughts

I guess police officers not making their scheduled court appearances is a more common occurrence than i thought.

And "Stay away from Northgate Mall" is a more common sentence condition than i imagined.

  • This content is a little bit vague for someone not qute in the loop. Not sure if you intended that or not.
    "Sentence condition?"
Are you saying that you are disappointed about a police officer who missed a court date and a judge who warned someone to "stay away from Northgate Mall" as a sentence for a crime?

  • I spent most of the day in criminal court as i had been subpoenaed as a witness. Several cases were dismissed because the arresting officer was not present. One or two more were continued for that reason. The ones that were dismissed had already been continued at least once. Fortunately, none of these were serious crimes, but still.

The citing officer in my case (it was a noise ordinance violation, so there was no arrest) did not appear, but the prosecutor was reluctant to let it go before the judge lest it be dismissed despite my appearance. So she and the defendants attorney agreed to mediation, pending my approval. So i agreed as well, despite my strong belief that this is not a dispute that needs to be mediated, but a violation that needs to be dealt with by the legal system.

    Oh well.

And yes, at least 4 defendants were sentenced to court costs, community service, probation, and "Stay away from Northgate Mall." I thought that was amusing.

  • Durham's legal system doesn't work.
    Who knew?
