A prediction

The New York Yankees will not be in the 2009 World Series.

Now, what kind of odds can i get on that?

  • The Yankees are 3-1 to win the AL Pennant, so mathematically speaking, you could get 1-3 odds on them not winning.

  • 3-1, huh? I would have thought they'd be close to even money.

Oh well, those odds aren't good enough yet to lay my money down.

  • The Yankees cannot possibly lose enough to satisfy my desire to see them lose. But since they've set up a situation where anything short of winning the World Series will be widely considered a failure, the prospects for a schadenfreude-ishly satisfying 2009 campaign are looking good.

  • As someone who was brought up to hate the Yankees, there was a period of time about a decade ago when they were winning all those World Series, but also earning respect. The core of the team was a bunch of young kids who came up through the system (Jeter, Williams, Posada, Pettite) and their free agent signings were not always the top of the market guys, but rather scrappers who you couldn't count on to lead the league in homeruns or batting average every year (think Paul O'Neill or Scott Brosius.)

Now, after Jason Giambi and Roger Clemens, and this year's free agent signings, well, fuck the Yankees. I hope they go another 20 years without winning the Series.

And i hope those $2500 seats stay empty all year long.
