Place your bets

Will Sarah Palin's nomination as the Republican VP candidate make it out of the convention on Thursday?

My money is on no.

UPDATE: That's what i'm talking about.

  • Absolutely. Yup. Yup.

And then she'll resign, citing family issues. And McCain will appoint Lieberman (if he gets his way) or Romney (if Rove gets his.)

Palin is just to appease the RTL crowd.

I also don't believe that Bristol-Lynn is pregnant, now. I think there will be no marriage, and she will have a "miscarriage" in short order.

Jeez. Who's writing this implausible script, anyway?

  • Palin's more experienced than Obama.

The best argument the Dems have against Palin is a pregnant 17 year old? Very very sad. You can tell when the Dems are running scared.

Remember Paul Wellstone. After the abuse the Dems are piling on this girl, get ready for every woman who had the same problem to vote for Palin.

  • No way she makes it out of the convention. The AIP membership and support are a deal breaker. The GOP is hoping against hope that the pregnancy thing overshadows the AIP issue in the media, but it's already starting to make the rounds this morning.

Good luck finding a VP now, nobody wants to be second pick to Palin. Except maybe Cheney.

  • I don't think she'll be booted. Evangelicals aren't going to rally around other candidates after how strongly they've come out in support of Palin. Honestly, I don't think these 'scandals' are going to deter that many people from voting for a McCain/Palin ticket, and the added support from evangelicals who are more likely to vote now is substantial.

    Yup. Very scared.

You would love for that to be true. If you were paying attention, you would know that the dems say the pregnancy is a non issue. Lucky for us reality based people, she's enough of a trainwreck on the real issues, all we have to do is sit back and wait for the mainstream media to find out who she really is.

527s, earmarks, Ted Stevens, Bridge to Nowhere? That's not change we can believe in.

  • I'm ambivalent about Palin (wasn't going to vote for McCain anyway) but I'd take that bet Barry...the GOP is pretty good at circling the wagons...

By Blogger Brian, at 3:27 PM

  • Heh heh. That's not even change.

BTW, looks like Republicans have their own problems with Ms Sarah:
Ms. Palin's experience in government makes Barack Obama look like George C. Marshall. She served two terms on the city council of Wasilla, Alaska, population 9,000. She served two terms as mayor. In November, 2006, she was elected governor of the state, a job she has held for a little more than 18 months. She has zero foreign policy experience, and no record on national security issues.

All this would matter less, but for this fact: The day that John McCain announced his selection of Sarah Palin was his birthday. His 72nd birthday. Seventy-two is not as old as it used to be, but Mr. McCain had a bout with melanoma seven years ago, and his experience in prison camp has uncertain implications for his future health.

If anything were to happen to a President McCain, the destiny of the free world would be placed in the hands of a woman who until recently was a small-town mayor.

Mr. McCain's supporters argue that he is more serious about national security than Barack Obama. But the selection of Sarah Palin invites the question: How serious can he be if he would place such a neophyte second in line to the presidency? Barack Obama at least balanced his inexperience with Mr. Biden's experience. What is Mr. McCain doing?

  • Better a small town mayor and former governor than a failed haberdasher.

the dems say the pregnancy is a non issue

Really, which ones besides Obama who takes the "high road" while his minions go berserk? Or have you not been reading Kos.

She'll be on the ticket. She's too popular with the people who might actually vote for her. Like Brian said, the ones who are making the noise are the ones who would never have voted for McCain if his running mate were Ghandi.

  • DKos hardly qualifies as "The Dems", and the pregnancy is hardly "The best argument" being leveled against Palin. You're reaching.

Have you been reading DKos? A lot going on over there on the real issues.

And all of the left wing talking heads I've seen are steering clear of the pregnancy. If James Carville won't bite, it's not gonna get bit. Much to the chagrin of the McCain campaign, which would love the dems to make themselves look bad by attacking on that issue.

And don't be so sure about those wagons, there are plenty of high level GOPers who are plenty pissed about this pick. I think there are a lot of republican pols who would be more than happy to have Johnny go down in flames this year so they can pick up the standard in 2012.

  • I suspect it's now the Republicans making a bigger issue of the Dems making the pregnancy an issue than the Dems making the pregnancy an issue. They want us to look like we're beating up on poor Juneau Palin. It's absurd to say the pregnancy is the Dems best attack against Palin when:

    * she believes in teaching creationism in the schools

    * has zero, truly zero, foreign-policy experience

    * has even less experience than Barack Obama! (if you want to say Obama isn't qualified to be President, you must acknowledge the same of Palin; Obama at least chose someone to run with who had qualifications, if you disagree with him)

    * does not believe that climate change is caused by man

    * is under investigation by the Alaska State Legislature for improper hiring and firing of state officials

    * had supported the Bridge-to-Nowhere before she was against it

    * and she just happened to have cut 2.1 million from an April 2008 Alaska budget line item from Covenant House, an organization that helps teenage runaways include pregnant teens who want to keep their babies (ok, you got me; no one would care if she didn't happen to have a pregnant teenage daughter)

  • Brian - i will gladly buy you a beer at the Oyster Bar on Friday afternoon if Palin is still the VP nominee.

    Say, between 4:30 & 5.

By Blogger Barry, at 10:50 PM

  • Crazy conspiracy theory: McCain picked Palin because he wants her to get dumped. And then, he'll say to the Republican right wing, "OK, I tried playing it your way and it didn't work. Now I'm going with Lieberman like I wanted to do in the first place."

Nah, I don't actually believe it. I just like conspiracy theories.

  • Barry--Deal!

The reciprocal, naturally, is also offered...when do you get there?

By Blogger Brian, at 8:41 AM

  • Oh, sorry...for some reason I didn't see the last line of your comment. See you then...

By Blogger Brian, at 8:42 AM

  • Mrs. D said something similar, David. Her theory is that McCain woke up one morning last week and said, "what the hell was i thinking? I don't want to be president. I'm too old for this shit."

so he choose Sarah Palin as his running mate.

By Blogger Barry, at 9:54 AM

  • I get the whole argument, but we've already seen that if McCain shares any traits with Bush (and he clearly does), it's the impulse to make crazy decisions on impulse, and then stay with them through the end, because changing would show weakness.

    Palin's in 'til the end.
