Cats
I finally figured out that my cats are receiving their behavioral instructions from a radio tower located somewhere in Rocky Mount. It's the only explanation for why the two of them both wake up many nights at 3 am from sound sleep needing, more than anything else in the world, to be outside.
I wonder if anyone else's cats are receiving the same communications?

apparently it goes back to old time folklore and this year, "Cat Nights" begins around August 17th, at the tail end of "Dog Days"...

Wow - -what a coincidence. I get hungry about the same time, so I grab a can of cat food, walk down the street to your house, and open the can just outside with a portable can opener. I wonder if these things are related somehow?

Curiously, one is a neutered male, and the other is a spayed female. They basically have the house to themselves most nights, so if they really needed to do that cat thing, what's wrong with the porch?
Except, of course, that they hate each other.

It's the communication from the Mother Ship telling them what to say & do & when. Ignore at the risk of inconvenient hairballs in your path & on your stuff. Remember you are their servant ;-)
