Idle musings

It's interesting that the two stories posted about Patrick Baker's move from the manager's office to the attorney's office here yesterday, and the two stories that Kevin posted about same, have attracted a grand total of two comments, one at each of our sites.

I think this story is a pretty big deal, and i know that a number of the principals involved read both of our blogs. I'd have thought at least one of those posts would have generated more discussion.

Perhaps if Patrick had announced that he was going to become a partner in a new downtown restaurant that specializes in osso buco you all would have had more to say?

  • The Goddess of Comments is a fickle bitch, bestowing her gifts and curses as she will. You can bust your ass on a post and get no response, or you can get 25 responses to a throwaway line that wasn't even the point in a throwaway post. Personally, I feel that the Goddess of Comments must be an avatar of Eris, and will not be commanded.

  • It's going to be on Seminary Street and he's pledged to give away free donuts to all unshowered Duke students on scholarships who ride their bikes downtown to the store and refuse a glass of water to wash them down with!

  • I also heard that Baker's Dunkin Donuts was going to be located on Seminary Street. However anonymous sources report that Capitol Broadcasting is using some new incentives to recruit Baker to move his store to American Tobacco.

    DDI is also involved. But they're working in the shadows since that fiasco when DDI recruited Peacefire Gallery to move from Broad Street to downtown -- only to watch as the local shop went out of business.

  • Barry, you'll get more hits if you can tie Patrick Baker's transition to the City Attorney position to Duke lacrosse. Or just put in a throwaway line anywhere about "Duke lacrosse".

  • But seriously, I guess I haven't commented on the Patrick Baker issue because I feel terribly ignorant on how our city really works, and I haven't spent the time to get to understand it - which is my own fault. So I read your blog and BCR and The Bull in Full in order to understand better, but I don't feel that I'm wise enough to comment. Maybe I could ask questions in the comments, but that would just expose the depth of my ignorance.

    So I'm reading! Just quietly. :)

  • I think Cleste identified the problem -- people don't know what the city manager position is or how one is hired and, so, lay low.

    Me? I have an opinion: If Patrick Baker made such a lousy city manager (and he did!) then why the hell are we keeping him as an employee of the city and letting him be our City Attorney??!!

    He's either blowing Bill Bell or he has a photo of someone else blowing Bill Bell.

  • anonymous - i think it's entirely possible that Baker will be an excellent city attorney, despite his flaws as a city manager. the skill sets are not the same.

    and as Ray Gronberg points out in the HS today, people from all across the spectrum of Durham political activists are in agreement that the next manager needs to be someone the council can trust to do his/her job.

  • Baker moved into the City Manager's job originally from a position as assistant city attorney, so he's certainly qualified for his new job, but his role in keeping certain public health issues secret? Unforgivable. Shows very poor judgment.

  • No, no, no, Baker's not opening a donut shop on Seminary St. He's using city funds to tear down the Snow Building and put it there, right after Five Points Cafe opens.
