Royal Ice Cream marker
There's a heightened push being made to get a commemorative marker installed by the state to make note of the 1957 sit-in for civil rights at the site of the Royal Ice Cream parlor on Roxboro St.
Although i've written about this event, (as have a number of other Durham bloggers), and the commemorative events that took place earlier this year marking the 50th anniversary of the sit-in, i don't know as i've flat out said here that i support, at a minimum, the state installing a commemorative marker at the site.
I'd like to correct that oversight. Put the marker up.

Thank you, Barry.
We do feel it's important that the Royal Ice Cream sit-in is recognized by the State of North Carolina with an "official" state marker.
The last letter from Raleigh explained how to get a non-state marker. Of the 1,513 state markers across North Carolina, only three commemorate the Civil Rights movement. We can do better. This needs to be an official recognition from the state.
The Board of Education endorsed the resolution on Nov 15. City Council voted to support it on Nov 20. And the Board of County Commissioners will hopefully endorse the resolution on Dec 3 (a busy night since Council is presenting its resolution at the same time).

It's too bad the church that owned the site saw fit to tear the entire structure down for a parking lot.
Does that still count as irony?

My understanding is that the church is planning to build an early education center on the site.
