Interesting

I'm enjoying reading comments on various legal blogs about the recent hiring and subsequent firing of Duke law Professor Erwin Chemerinsky from a position as Dean of the newly created UC Irvine Law School.

Particularly amusing is the reaction of several commenters apparently incredulous that anyone in California, especially Southern California, has ever been turned down for a job because they're too liberal. Because nothing conservative has ever come out of Southern California.

  • It's a shame. I know people who've taken classes with him at Duke and -- liberal that he may be outside the classroom -- he's a balanced teacher inside, and one who is by all accounts one of the finest teachers *and* researchers of law at Duke Law or just about any law school.

Find me a Duke Law student from the right wing who complains about "indoctrination" from Chemerinsky. You won't, and for good reason. That ain't him.

On the other hand, you'll find a professor who actually gets to know his student and is a great husband and parent. Too bad those are "liberal" attributes.

  • Irvine's in Orange County, home or Richard Nixon. It's very conservative.

And as I don't have to tell Mr. Dependable, the central valley is quite conservative. The freepers are based in Fresno (no offense to Fresno, though. Some of the nicest people I've ever known were from Fresno).
