My Spidey-sense is tingling

Something about this story doesn't pass the smell test.

Six New Jersey men have been arrested in what authorities said was a plot to kill soldiers at a U.S. Army installation in New Jersey, local media reported on Tuesday.

Investigators said the men planned to use automatic weapons to enter Fort Dix and kill as many soldiers as possible, according to the Newark Star-Ledger and television stations in Philadelphia and New York.

FBI agents arrested five of the men in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and another elsewhere after members of the group allegedly attempted to buy automatic weapons, the Star-Ledger reported.

Michael Drewniak, a spokesman for U.S. attorney's office in Newark, New Jersey, confirmed the arrests but declined to offer details.

"There were terrorist arrests last evening," he said.

The suspects will be charged with terrorism conspiracy on Tuesday in federal court in Camden, New Jersey, according to the reports.

The suspects traveled over the last several months from New Jersey to the Pocono mountains area in northeastern Pennsylvania where they practiced firing automatic weapons, the reports said.

So they've been practicing with automatic weapons for the past several months, but they were arrested trying to purchase automatic weapons? And they were going to use these weapons to try to shoot soldiers on an Army base?

Other reports describe the men as "nationals of the former Yugoslavia."

Maybe they were Serbians who were still pissed off at Bill Clinton?

UPDATE: BBC reports that "Four of the men were born in the former Yugoslavia, one in Jordan and one in Turkey, a spokesman (for the US Attorney's office in New Jersey)said. He described the suspects as "Islamic radicals"."

OK, here's my bet. First, that the Pocono Mountains area where these guys "trained?" Affiliated with right-wing survivalists and militias. Second that the description "Islamic radicals" turns out to be unsupported, and dropped from official accounts before the week is out.

  • I doubt they were automatic weapons. The press usually gets this wrong. There are semi-automatic versions of the M16 and AK47 (I own both, they are common in the gun community) that are completely legal for anyone to buy if they already qualify to buy any other long gun. Except not in New Jersey. New Jersey has some of the most draconian anti-gun laws on the east coast. Those guns would be readily available in Pennsylvania, though.

There would be nobody handy at a gun shop to arrest these guys for trying to buy a gun.

Depending on why their NICS check was declined, it may not have been illegal for them to apply to buy a gun in the first place.
