Becks

For all that he's overpaid, past his prime, and didn't really make soccer a household sport in the US, i feel really bad for David Beckham, suffering a potential career ending injury just 3 months before the World Cup.

This picture really does speak a thousand words.

  • I feel bad for him too, despite his bad tattoos and haircuts, etc etc. I think I can relate to a 34-year-old guy trying to prove he's still got game. The old guys are my favorite players these days--Friedel, Giggs, Graham Alexander, etc... Er, maybe not Ronaldinho.

All the same, it's not like he hasn't been to the World Cup before. Three times he's been, in fact.

  • True enough. But to put in the work he has over the past 2 years for the sole purpose of getting back to the World Cup . . .

I'm trying to think of an American athlete who would take his game overseas in the off-season, essentially for free, to get into shape to play for his country during a world championship tournament.

Well, it's hard because the big North American sports have no comparable international competitions (although Olympic hockey isn't bad).

I agree that Beckham's commitment to his World Cup goal was impressive. It's disappointing that he won't be there. It's also a blow to the MLS, which will probably have to lower its revenue expectations somewhat.

Speaking of the MLS, the RailHawks are playing a friendly against the NE Revolution this Saturday.

  • Kind of a chicken and egg thing with the World Baseball Classic, though. Especially since so many teams won't even let their players go.

Basketball has both a World Cup and the Olympics, but i don't think you see any b-ball players in tears if they don't get called up to play for their country.

Would love to go to the game Saturday; alas, i have other commitments already.

  • Basketball (and baseball) may have their international competitions, but they command a tiny fraction of the interest of the World Cup.

When more than a handful of countries are competitive in those sports (or, in the case of baseball, even PLAY the game), US athletes may start to take international participation as seriously as Beckham.

If Landon Donovan were to rupture his Achilles tendon during a game for the LA Galaxy in the next two months, we can bet he will be just as devastated as Beckham. I hope we don't find out, though.
