Does anybody seriously believe that Democrats are in danger of losing Teddy Kennedy's Senate seat for the first time in 2 generations because they're on the verge of passing a health care reform package that's too liberal?
THANK you. I cannot stand that the Democrats in Washington--concerned about the alienation within their own party (which is largely on the left, those who feel that the government has done too much to ensure the luxuries of the few, while ignoring the needs of the many)--think that the way to avoid irrelevance is through placating the right wing. Do they really believe that the people who voted for Obama did so because they were convinced he, more than McCain, would keep everything more or less the same?
Bummed ... and of course the "lesson" we're asked to take from the Massachusetts vote is not to hope for "too much" progress, "too much" equality, or "too much" justice.
Since 1949, Durhamites have slept soundly, secure in the knowledge that, in our town, erection can be depended upon. Now, thanks to the power of the internets, we can spread that security all over the world.
