Not so punitive?
Justice David Souter wrote for the court that punitive damages may not exceed what the company already paid to compensate victims for economic losses, about $500 million compensation.
Souter said that a penalty should be "reasonably predictable" in its severity.
Maybe we can just send them to their room for an hour of time-out?

Is it the 1:1 ratio that bothers you, the general idea of any ratio, or something else?

No - it's the idea that a jury came up with a number, and the courts have successively whittled that number down to something which isn't even remotely "punitive."
Last i heard, the 7th amendment to the Constitution was still in effect.
